APELON ANNOUNCES TERMINOLOGY SERVER SUPPORT FOR INTERSYSTEMS TECHNOLOGY
Support enhances availability of open source terminology server solution
Ridgefield, CT, November 10, 2008 – Apelon, Inc., a leading provider of terminology and data interoperability solutions, today announced that its open source Distributed Terminology System (DTS) terminology server now supports multiple software products from InterSystems Corporation.
DTS is a comprehensive terminology server platform that that centralizes terminology knowledge (such as HITSP national standards SNOMED CT®, LOINC®, RxNorm® and NDF-RT®) and provides terminology services (such as normalization, lookup, translation, and aggregation) to other network applications. DTS enables the management of industry standards, local vocabularies and their associated mappings within EMRs, CPOEs, and decision support systems.
InterSystems is a leading provider of software for connected healthcare. Support for DTS terminology and mapping capabilities will be provided for the InterSystems CACHÉ® high-performance object database, InterSystems Ensemble® rapid integration and development platform and InterSystems HealthShare™ platform for regional and national electronic health records.
Open source licensing models have become increasingly common in today’s software market. Open source applications such as the Department of Veterans Affairs' CACHÉ-based VistA® electronic medical record system have enabled healthcare organizations to reduce dependence on proprietary software, leverage the development expertise of all licensees, and reduce the cost of deploying enterprise applications. The leading commercial vocabulary server for many years, DTS was made open source in May of 2007. Since then, it has been downloaded over 1500 times by organizations worldwide.
“Making DTS open source has helped many entities render health data more comparable,“ said Stephen Coady, Apelon’s President and CEO. “When that’s commonplace, the much anticipated economic benefits of health information technology will be realized. By partnering with InterSystems we are able to bring semantic interoperability to a much broader community of healthcare enterprises”.
"We are very pleased that Apelon is adding support for InterSystems technologies to its DTS terminology server," said Paul Grabscheid, InterSystems Vice President of Strategic Planning. "Ongoing enhancement of standards-based data sharing and terminology management is key to enabling the connected healthcare initiatives that are critical to achieving cost-effective, quality care delivery."
