APELON RELEASES FREE DESKTOP BROWSER TO ACCESS NATIONAL STANDARD TERMINOLOGIES
Easy, Intuitive Exploration of Structured Vocabularies Used in Medical Records

RIDGEFIELD, CT – November 03, 2004 – Apelon, provider of healthcare terminology solutions, today announced availability of a free standalone browser for easily accessing SNOMED Clinical Terms® (SNOMED CT®) and ICD-9-CM national standard terminologies. This establishes Apelon as the only software vendor committed to accelerating the adoption of national standard terminologies by offering innovative terminology browsers at no cost.

The browser, called Mycroft, is used to examine terminologies, navigate terminology hierarchies, see details of concepts, search for concepts, and view relationships among concepts. SNOMED Clinical Terms (SNOMED CT) and ICD-9-CM terminologies from the National Library of Medicine’s (NLM) Unified Medical Language System® (UMLS®) Metathesaurus® are included with Mycroft at no cost for use within the United States. The Mycroft browser is available now for download it here.

The Mycroft browser is based on the Microsoft® .NET Framework version 1.1, a component of Microsoft Windows®. Mycroft does not need a network connection to operate. It is intuitive and complete right out of the box.“ Apelon hopes that this complimentary desktop browser will encourage people to explore and better understand standard terminologies,” said Apelon President Stephen Coady. “When one can navigate hierarchies and view detailed attributes of a concept, it should be easier to envision practical applications.”

A specimen screen from the Mycroft browser shows navigation down the SNOMED CT tree hierarchy to explore the concept “acute necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis (disorder)” in the left panel. Concept attributes for “acute necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis (disorder)” — synonyms, properties (including ICD-9-CM code map), roles and associations — are shown in the right panel. As one would expect, the information displayed is hyperlinked whenever appropriate, and trees may be expanded or contracted.
