CDC Selects Apelon for Agency-Wide Terminology System
Enterprise Vocabulary System Will Integrate CDC Terminology Efforts
RIDGEFIELD, CT – January 28, 2004 – Apelon,
Inc., provider of healthcare terminology software and solutions,
today announced that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
(CDC) has selected Apelon's Distributed Terminology System (DTS)
for its Enterprise Vocabulary System (EVS) project. Leveraging previous
vocabulary work done in the Apelon TDE environment, the CDC EVS will
enable the secure and consistent collection, analysis and management
of national public health information across CDC application areas.
The CDC is recognized as the lead federal agency for protecting
the health and safety of people at home and abroad, providing credible
information to enhance health decisions and promoting health through
strong partnerships. The CDC serves as the national focus for developing
and applying disease prevention and control, environmental health,
and health promotion and education activities designed to improve
the health of the people of the United States.
As part of this charge, the CDC works with many federal agencies,
state public health departments, and public and private healthcare
delivery organizations to collect and analyze health information
critical to improving public health while protecting individual rights
to privacy. Consistent analysis and reporting of these aggregate
data require that the data be normalized to standard representations.
Current CDC-led information system development efforts include the
National Electronic Disease Surveillance System (NEDSS) initiative
and other component projects in the Public Health Information Network
(PHIN).
To avoid fragmentation and improve collaboration among its public
health partners, the CDC will begin to integrate its data standardization
efforts internally with the EVS. The system, based on Apelon's DTS,
will encompass the tools and capabilities for the management, coordination
and, as needed, development of public health terminologies, classifications
and value sets. The system will also provide access to other national
vocabulary standards, such as SNOMED CT® and ICD-9-CM.
"Apelon is very proud to have been selected for this significant
project," said Apelon President Stephen Coady. "The CDC
plays a critical role in protecting the health of people throughout
the United States and around the world. The EVS project will greatly
improve the CDC's ability to integrate, analyze and disseminate consistent,
fact-based public health information."
Apelon's DTS is an advanced solution for the management
and deployment of standard terminologies. The DTS Knowledgebase provides
unique
integration of all critical healthcare terminologies, including SNOMED
CT®, CPT™, ICD-9-CM, ICD-10, drug vocabularies and all
vocabularies available in the National Library of Medicine's Metathesaurus.
The
latest version of DTS provides a powerful subscription update service,
enhanced features for the localization of terminologies, advanced
version management capabilities and flexible subsetting methodologies,
all of which ensure continued return on an organization's terminology
investment.
This contract extends Apelon's existing efforts in the management
and deployment of standardized terminologies. Apelon's clients include
the American Medical Association, Dictaphone, Eclipsys Corporation,
ECRI, Kaiser Permanente, Motorola, the National Aeronautics and Space
Administration, the National Cancer Institute, the National Library
of Medicine, Philips Medical Systems and the U.S. Department of Veterans
Affairs.
