APELON ANNOUNCES CORE CLINICAL KNOWLEDGE BASE

RIDGEFIELD, CT – July 1, 2003 – Apelon, Inc., supplier of healthcare terminology software and services, today announced its Core Clinical Knowledge Base product to facilitate deployment of standardized terminologies in healthcare organizations. This assembly and offering of a basic minimum content set is now possible because of today's announcement by Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson of a nationwide perpetual license for SNOMED CT® (See Announcement).

Apelon's Core Clinical Knowledge Base assists healthcare organizations in deploying standard terminologies for health outcomes research, electronic medical record systems and the capture, analysis and cross correlation of clinical data. The Core Clinical Knowledge Base includes SNOMED CT, ICD-9-CM, CPT®-4, LOINC, Apelon's Consumer Health Terminology and all standard HL7 code sets. Additional terminologies, including MeSH (the NLM's Medical Subject Headings) and standard drug terminologies, are also available. Mappings between and among the terminologies are provided by Apelon, including associations to UMLS® Concept Unique Identifiers, and will be maintained and updated as new releases of each component content become available.

"We congratulate the NLM and SNOMED," says Apelon President Stephen Coady. "That there is now enough readily licensable content to constitute a Core Clinical Knowledge Base is an indication that the industry is making significant, practical progress toward the requisite infrastructure for evidence-based medicine."

Apelon has played a role in many of the major government and private initiatives to manage and deploy standardized terminologies. Apelon has worked with the NLM on the UMLS for more than fifteen years. The College of American Pathologists (CAP) uses Apelon tools to build and maintain SNOMED. Kaiser Permanente, a major contributor of content to SNOMED, uses the Apelon Terminology Development Environment (TDE) software. Apelon's TDE is also used by the AMA, who own and maintain CPT.

Apelon is actively engaged with the practical deployment of structured vocabularies at the NCI, the VA, the CDC, the FDA and at leading commercial entities such as Ardais, Eclipsys, Harris, IBM, IDX Systems, Motorola and Philips Medical Systems.

Apelon's Core Clinical Knowledge Base will be available both embedded in Apelon products (such as Apelon's DTS run time vocabulary server software) and by subscription through Apelon-hosted Web Services.
