COMMERCE DEPARTMENT FUNDS NATIONAL HEALTHCARE PROJECT
Apelon to Assist Development of System for Sharing 'Best Practices'

RIDGEFIELD, CT – January 29, 2002 – Apelon, Inc., the world's largest supplier of medical terminology software and services, has been selected to provide clinical vocabulary products and expertise for another national healthcare project.

Funded by the U.S. Department of Commerce's National Institute of Technology's (NIST) Advance Technology Program, the three-year, $9.2 million grant will support research to create and distribute electronic clinical guidelines-also known as "best medical practices". The project is led by IDX Systems (Nasdaq: IDXC), with Apelon, Intermountain Health Care, Mayo Clinic, Stanford University, and University of Nebraska as research partners.

Stanford, Mayo, IHC and the University of Nebraska will provide clinical and academic expertise in the development of guideline models and knowledge representation. Apelon, which specializes in the application of structured medical vocabularies to clinical information systems, will provide software and services to assist in the development and deployment of the guideline knowledge.

"Apelon focuses on some important practicalities of what is needed to develop, disseminate, and benefit from guidelines," said Stephen Coady, CEO of Apelon.

NIST's Advanced Technology Program provides cost-shared funding to advance particularly challenging research and development projects with the potential to spark important, broad-based economic or social benefits for the United States. To see the full NIST release, click here.
