APELON POWERS WEB PLATFORM FOR NCI RESEARCHERS
Terminology, Integration Projects Give Researchers Improved Access
To "Mouse Model" Cancer Information
RIDGEFIELD, CT – October 18, 2001 – Apelon,
the world's largest supplier of medical terminology software and
services, will demonstrate enhanced Web access to the National Cancer
Institute's (NCI) "mouse model resources" at a Jackson
Laboratory Conference, October 18-21. Through its sponsorship of
the Mouse Models of Human Cancers Consortium (MMHCC), NCI has accumulated
diverse Web-based resources of critical importance to cancer researchers,
and it has retained Apelon to help develop a Web platform that enables
researchers to find what they need. Cancer researchers will explore
uses of these new applications at the "Modeling Human Prostate
Cancer in Mice" Conference at the Jackson site in Bar Harbor,
Maine.
The NCI's MMHCC was established in 1999 to facilitate the development
and validation of mouse models of human cancers and to accelerate
their dissemination to the research community. Working with the NCI's
Center for Bioinformatics, Apelon is enhancing web-based access to
information for MMHCC researchers so they may more effectively utilize
transgenic mice in their study of human cancers. The NCI platform
utilizes Apelon's terminology development and run-time systems that
link special MMHCC displays and a variety of cancer resources. By "explaining
mouse models to a computer," the NCI terminology initiative
coordinates term use among scientists working in diverse locations.
The Mouse Model terminology enables scientists to search mouse model
resources using mouse pathologic diagnoses, anatomic terminology,
images and protocols, and will ultimately link to genetic data, e.g.
molecular signatures related to the models.
"We are proud that Apelon's services and software have been
selected for this important and exciting research project," said
Apelon's President Stephen Coady. Researchers studying cancers and
pharmaceutical therapies have long used mouse models for experimentation
and analysis. Mouse models are often bred to develop specific cancers
so that researchers can assess the efficacy of treatments.
More than 95 cancer researchers are expected to attend the Bar Harbor
meeting.
