HEALTHWISE TO ADVANCE INFORMATION THERAPY WITH APELON TECHNOLOGY
Apelon's Concept-Based Indexing and Retrieval Suite to Help Healthwise Clients Deliver the Right Information to the Right People at the Right Time

RIDGEFIELD, CT – February 5, 2001 – Apelon, Inc., the leading supplier of health care terminology tools and services, will provide its Concept-Based Indexing and Retrieval technology to Healthwise, Incorporated, so that it can support the Information Therapy capabilities of its Web content clients. Healthwise will index every Healthwise® Knowledgebase topic to clinical concepts and industry-standard vocabularies, including billing codes, to make it easier for physicians and health information systems to send people the information they need to make better health decisions. The indexed Healthwise product is the first of its kind and will be available this summer.

The explosive growth of the Internet and an associated thirst for health information by consumers have placed significant demands on Web portals and health care content developers to provide easier, more effective access to information. Apelon's Concept-Based Indexing and Retrieval software addresses this issue, allowing information providers to index health care-related topics and documents more effectively and automatically, facilitating the timely identification, retrieval, and distribution of relevant content.

According to Donald W. Kemper, chairman and CEO of Healthwise, individually targeted Information Therapy advances the Healthwise mission of helping people make better health decisions. The company is developing new strategies to connect people with information at the time they need it in order to improve the quality and reduce the cost of their health care. "Information is powerful medicine," said Kemper, "and Apelon technology makes it even more powerful. The Healthwise Knowledgebase-with Apelon indexing and search features-will unlock new business opportunities for e-health companies looking to add more value to health care. Our new intelligent health content is worthy of information prescriptions by doctors to their patients."

The Healthwise Knowledgebase contains in-depth, reliable, and up-to-date information on 1,900 health problems, 600 medical tests and procedures, 900 alternative medicine topics, 500 support groups, and 3,000 drug therapies; it is a key resource for deciding when health care services are necessary and which ones to select. More than 20 million families access Healthwise information each year through Web content, nurse call center resources, and self-care guides.

"Receiving an order from a company of Healthwise's stature, which has such exacting standards, highlights the strength of our proprietary technology," said Stephen Coady, president and CEO of Apelon. "We look forward to helping Healthwise achieve their goal of helping health care organizations to deliver the right information to the right individual at the right time."

Apelon will display its Concept-Based Indexing and Retrieval software at the Healthcare Information Management & Systems Society (HIMSS) 2001 Conference and Exhibition February 4-8, at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans, Booth #4424.
