MEDICAL SOFTWARE AND CLINICAL VOCABULARY DEVELOPERS
ANNOUNCE LICENSING AGREEMENT
College of American Pathologists to use Lexical tools in development
of SNOMED-RT
Alameda, CA - November 5, 1998 – Lexical
Technology, Inc. and the College of American Pathologists (CAP),
developers of SNOMED® International, the Systematized Nomenclature
of Medicine, today announced that CAP has licensed Lexical's Metaphrase® Architect
for use in the development of SNOMED-RT.
The Metaphrase Architect is the newest product in Lexical's Metaphrase
Enterprise Vocabulary System (EVS), a family of software components
and services for the creation, management, and support of authoritative
vocabularies for health care enterprises. Based on Lexical's experience
with The Convergent Medical Terminology (CMT) Project and Kaiser-Permanente,
the Metaphrase Architect is designed for the development of large,
comprehensive terminologies. It permits distributed development of
vocabulary content and structure, assists resolution of modeler conflicts,
and assures consistent and principled terminology evolution. "The
College of American Pathologists, through SNOMED International, is
playing a leading role in the new focus on vocabulary in health care," said
David Sherertz, founder, president, and CEO of Lexical. "We
are pleased that CAP has selected the Metaphrase Architect as part
of its development environment for this important effort."
SNOMED-RT, the next generation in clinical vocabulary, is the CAP's
comprehensive structured reference terminology supporting data capture,
retrieval, analysis and transfer. Used for electronic medical records,
outcomes analysis and clinical decision support, SNOMED-RT captures
in a consistent way the complexities of medicine across the broad
spectrum of healthcare specialty areas. "The Metaphrase Architect
facilitates our ability to model essential characteristics of diseases
and relationships of specific conditions within a distributed development
environment," said Kent A. Spackman MD PhD, Editor and Scientific
Director of SNOMED.
The College of American Pathologists (CAP) is a medical society
serving more nearly 16,000 physician members and the laboratory community
throughout the world. It is the world's largest association composed
exclusively of pathologists and is widely considered the leader in
laboratory quality assurance. The CAP, which is an advocate for high
quality and cost effective patient care, has recently committed more
than $17 million to the continued development of SNOMED over the
next five years.
